Grade 3 Homework

In grade 3, students are expected to read for 20 minutes each evening.

Students should be practising the words they receive each Friday. These are their Word Study words and are related to our units of study. Please work with your child to practise these words.

Each week students will be expected to hand in one of the following assignments. The assignments will be decided on by the class as a whole. Students can complete their assignments on the computer using Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint Presentation or any other program they would like to use. Homework can also be handed in as a paper copy.

This week students may do one of the following for homework. We are encouraging students to do their homework in their own words other than reproducing work.

1) Write a book report which includes the title, the author, and a recommendation (reason for why you like it or don't like it) about the book.

2) Interview a character in a book. Include at least 5 questions and answers.

3) Write 10 facts from a non-fiction book which you have read.

4) Take a character from a book and create a story or comic strip about that character.

5) Take a story and write it as a comic strip.

Celery experiment




Today we got the results of our celery experiment.

We noticed that the water line has gone down. We also noticed that the leaves have gone red. We believe that the celery has sucked up the water and it has gone into the leaves. When we broke the celery we noticed the "strings" where the water had travelled up through the celery.

"The celery is like a big straw with leaves attached to it."

Virginia friends

Yesterday and today we met some new friends in Richmond, Virginia. Our teachers read stories to each other's classes. We really enjoyed listening to the story about Virginia and we even learned something about them. It was fun learning things with them. We are interested to learn more about them and hopefully we can tell them more about ourselves.

On our first day Skyping with them, there were technical difficulties when one kid in the other class tripped on the wires and they went bye-bye. We got a call back eventually, once they had fixed their technical difficulties.
